My Mum had my sister and I applying all sorts of things as face masks from the fridge or kitchen cupboard by the time we were teens. Natural beauty was part and parcel of being in a desi household. You understood that coconut oil was not just for cooking, it was part of a weekly ordeal where your hair would be covered from root to tip in coconut oil whether you liked it or not. Besan (or gram flour) was how you cleaned your face really well, yoghurt was for eating and conditioning hair and turmeric, as much as you hated it, was basically part of your life in more ways than one.

Things are so much different now, we can’t get enough of these natural beauty methods. When we’re home, Mum is often giving out to my sister and I for depleting her bottle of rose water (which I just pour into my bath) or almond oil (which we add to the countless hair masks and face masks). My sister has an insane and inspiring hair ritual that still involves coconut oil on a weekly basis.

One of the many gifts my Mum gave my sister and I while we were growing up was the gift of natural beauty. The most powerful natural beauty she has is the one that radiates from within, that’s really what keeps her lovely day after day. I’m still working hard on the stuff on the inside but every now and again her gorgeous face masks are in order!

The beauty of this face mask is you probably have most of the ingredients in your cupboard! Whip some up and pack it up in a lovely glass jar and write how to use the face mask on a gift label.*
