When posting a new blog, I’m asked what is on my mind? The other day I was in a coffee shop that was advertising it’s “healthy” summer drinks, beverages made with superfoods such as green tea, cinnamon and matcha… it got me thinking.
All of these foods are super and have numerous potent health benefits but their use in coffee shop summer drinks is somewhat questionable, especially as they are usually combined with plenty of sugar, syrups and what not.
I love a cooler as much as anyone, what’s not to love about sweet goodness on a hot summer’s day? The trouble is that these commercial sugary coolers aren’t great for us and something to be enjoyed every now and again as part of a balanced diet and not as an everyday thing because they are packaged with health foods.
So you might take a stab as to what has been on my mind (or what I’ve been craving) and in light of that I’m doing a summer drinks series! Made with alternatives to refined sugar like dates, coconut sugar and maple syrup but still delicious. Remember, sugar is still sugar and something to be enjoyed in moderation but maybe these ones a little more often!
First up is my green tea lemonade, made with delicious Kombucha from Pekoe. You can also use sparkling water instead of Kombucha, I just happened to have some after an awesome workshop at the weekend by the Kate Rosenberg owner of Healthy Hedonist TO and wanted to make a novel use of my Kombucha.
I would say if using Kombucha, ditch the maple syrup, but if you plan on using sparkling water stick with it.
250mls of Kombucha or sparkling water
250mls of brewed green tea (try to use an organic brand)
Juice of one lemon
1-2tbsp of maple syrup, depending on how sweet you like it & optional
Fresh lime wedges and ice cubes to serve
Combine all the ingredients (except the ice and lime wedges) together.
Divide and serve with ice and lime wedges.
